Overall: Deciem’s Advanced Retinoid 2% is an emulsion that is now renamed and marketed as the Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion due to the fact that the brand has expanded their retinoid and retinol range of products. This watery textured liquid has a milky feel and a pale yellow hue. I’ve tried retinoids before and they’ve worked ok for me but this one has been an absolute joy to use! It’s simple, easy and the best part is that it works. I don’t really have wrinkles to address anymore, but I do have acne scars and active acne. Cysts, to be more accurate. The advanced retinoid has helped with the improvement and healing of my acne scarring as well as with the texture of my skin. When I have active cysts and use this, the next day they are less red and appear to have shrunken up significantly. I’ve been using this for about 4 months and I can confidently say, I approve! If you are curious on what a retinoid is exactly, here’s the info from the deciem website, because I couldn’t have explained it better.
This formulation combines two forms of next-generation retinoid actives:
a) A 2% concentration of Granactive Retinoid which is a complex of solubilized Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR). HPR is a highly-advanced form of retinoid which is, in fact, a non-prescription ester of all-trans direct retinoic acid that offers a multi-fold better effect against signs of ageing than retinol, retinyl palmitate and nearly all other forms of non-prescription retinoid;
b) A sustained-delivery form of pure retinol in a protective capsule system which supports both the delivery and the effect of Granactive Retinoid
Both forms of retinoid used avoid the irritation associated with retinoids (including retinol) use while delivering better visible results against signs of ageing.
How: I used to apply this daily or every other day but I found that was disrupting my skin barrier. You know you’ve disrupted your skin barrier when you apply your moisturizer or sunscreen and it stings! Yikes. So please don’t overdo it with this or any other chemical peel, exfoliant or retinol related product. Too much of anything is never a good thing. Now I use this maybe once a week and I also use the Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane, but more on that later. I always use a retinol/retinoid product in the evening, right after I’ve cleansed, toned, and applied a serum. The retinoid is next, and the last layer is a good moisturizer. The next morning – and every morning – use SPF.
