When you think of ‘Clarifying’ products you think of acne-fighting products, exfoliants, abrasives, and other harsh-type elements. Dr. Barbara Sturm gave this collection a whole different approach. These are products for those who feel like they are oily and acne-prone but still want a solid fine-line-fighting solution. This collection consists of the most gentle, soothing, and lightweight products.
The serum contains Albatrellus Ovinus Extract and Purslane which can aid in calming the skin and reducing inflammation. The main properties of this serum aim to brighten and fortify the skin. This provides skin-barrier protection elements that can help skin fight break-outs and strengthen.
Ingredients: Purslane, Zinc, Albatrellus Ovinus Extract, Hyaluronic Acid, Bistorta Root Extract
How I use it: I love using this in the mornings after exfoliating or after using the Sturm Balancing Toner, which is also very gentle and enforces good pH balance on the skin. I find that it’s extremely lightweight and it feels like water. My skin loves it because it’s simple but very effective in keeping it soothed and strong. I love serums like this because they are so easy to work into my routine and I don’t have to spend too much time thinking whether it’s going to irritate me or cause issues with the rest of my routine. The zinc and the hyaluronic acid create a sort of protective layer and the more you use the serum the more you notice it on the skin. Because of the watery consistency of this serum, I think a little goes a long way and it would last a very long time, even if used daily!
The face cream contains a complex of Balloon Vine, Viper’s Bugloss and Sunflower Seed Oil. Sturm claims that these ingredients help to strengthen the skin’s barrier and help it to restore its natural balance. Again, Purslane and Zinc are hero elements which make the cream soothing, calming, and acne-fighting.
Ingredients: Purslane, Macadamia Oil, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin B3, Urea, Balloon Vine, Grape Seed Oil, Panthenol, Arginine, Zinc, Allantoin, Viper ’s Bugloss, Sunflower Seed Oil, Bistorta Root Extract, Skullcap, Rice Starch
How I use it: Although the cream claims to be appropriate for acne prone skin, the number of oils in here is what is contradicting. I do find the cream’s texture and feel to be quite lightweight and smoothing. It absorbs in the skin and leaves a subtle glow. Never greasy or heavy feeling. However, I personally don’t find Macadamia Oil appropriate for my skin along with Vitamin E. Those along with the other seed oils make this cream a little bit heavy for my skin even though it doesn’t feel that way. I have to be cautious when I use this or clogged pores will definitely happen.
An innovative spot treatment that offers coverage. This treatment has Tea Tree Oil as its star ingredient as well as Zinc. It claims to cover and smooth redness, pigmentation, and spots while aiding to heal and treat. Currently offered in three shades and a clear version coming soon as it’s under development.
Ingredients: Zinc, Vitamin B3, Jojoba Oil, Panthenol, Beeswax, Vitamin E, Tea Tree Leaf Oil, Bioflavonoids, Tinting Pigments (Iron Oxide, Tin oxide), Talc
How I use it: I have used this instead of concealer on my breakouts. I love the coverage it provides and the natural finish. I also love the packaging and how travel-friendly it is. It blends seamlessly with fingers. I am generally not a fan of essential oils as you might know so the Tea Tree here does not excite me. I would have preferred to see salicylic acid or a different active that targets blemishes. It is not matte which would have been more helpful since you are applying it on an active spot and the jojoba oil while soothing doesn’t help with the already clogged pore.
The mask is infused with Zinc and Clay which Sturm claims they absorb excess sebum and mattify the skin. The Purslane provides a soothing and calming effect. This is also infused with hydrating and smoothing ingredients. Sturm claims that this will unify the complexion, soothe irritation, provide hydration, and give a plumping effect.
Ingredients: Purslane, Vitamin E, Balloon Vine, Arginine, Bistorta Root Extract, Hyaluronic Acid, Sunflower Seed Oil, Viper’s Bugloss, Lentil Seed Extract, Allantoin, Zinc, Panthenol, Rapeseed Extract, Jojoba Oil, Kaolin
How I use it: I find this is a hydrating and replenishing mask that’s definitely soothing and calming. I love how it feels on the skin during application and how it leaves the skin feeling after application. It feels luxurious, rich, and soothing! I love the ingredients here and I think they work really well together. I am still a little bit confused as to what this mask it’s trying to achieve exactly. I wish this was a truly clarifying mask rather than an anti-aging, soothing, mattifying, and clarifying mask – if that makes any sense.
I think from the entire range the item I enjoy the most and find the most value in is the serum. It meshes really well with my skin and it makes me feel good about it! I certainly think the rest of the range is definitely worth checking out if it is in your price range, but I wouldn’t save up to grab these since there are other products on the market that can act as both soothing and clarifying.
